PORCELAIN ONLAYS
Porcelain Onlays
A porcelain onlay is a custom-made filling made of composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. The dentist will permanently cement the porcelain onlay onto the tooth. Onlays are used when there are large defective fillings or due to decay or trauma.
What is the process of an onlay procedure?
Two appointments are normally scheduled. The first appointment includes taking an accurate impression that will be used to create a custom onlay. While the tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and/or old filling materials.
The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared, shaping the surface to properly fit an onlay restoration. A temporary filling will be added to protect the tooth while the onlay is being made.
On the second appointment, the new onlay will be cemented into place.
